About

Come Meet Bernie — Our Sweet Little Comeback Kid Adopted from us in May of 2025, Bernie has made his way back to us as an owner surrender, through absolutely no fault of his own. While with his former family, he developed demodex — a treatable and manageable skin condition — but unfortunately did not receive the care needed, and it progressed. Demodex mites naturally live on almost all healthy dogs. Prevention of the mites themselves isn't possible, but preventing them from overgrowing is. The resulting condition, demodicosis (or “mange”), is highly curable and controllable through immune support and targeted treatments. Supporting your dog's immune health includes: • Healthy Diet: Feeding a complete and balanced commercial diet • Parasite Control: Keeping them on regular flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives • Vaccinations: Staying current on vaccines to protect against viruses that weaken the immune system Bernie's former family let us know they had not yet established veterinary care after adopting him. We urge all adopters to establish care within two weeks of adoption to ensure their pet stays healthy and protected. Since coming back to our facility, Bernie has begun treatment and is already on the path back to being the fluffy, adorable guy he was before. He is now looking for a fresh start — and if you are looking for a tiny, loyal, loving companion with the best glow-up story ever, Bernie may be the perfect match. Bernie is housetrained, crate trained, and wonderful with children of all ages. He previously lived with other dogs and did great with them, and even coexisted peacefully with a cat. He is incredibly sweet, loves to cuddle, has a fondness for socks, and has recently taken quite a liking to his stuffed pig toy. He weighs just 13 pounds but has a heart as big as they come. All of our adoptable dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date on age-appropriate vaccines and preventatives. Adopters will need to establish veterinary care to maintain their new family member's ongoing health and wellness. Remember the 3-3-3 Rule when adopting a shelter pet: 3 days to decompress 3 weeks to settle in 3 months to build trust Bernie's adoption fee is $80. We are a first-come, first-served, in-person adoption center located at 430 Bristol Drive in Statesville.Adoption hours: Monday–Friday 12–5pm, Saturday 11am–2pm. Please bring a leash and collar to take Bernie home, or you may purchase a combo from us for $15.
