Bill came to us from a hoarding situation after his owner was hospitalized. We don’t know his age, and when he arrived he had almost no experience with people. With proper care he’s now healthy and settled, but he’s very much a “display pet” — the kind you admire and enjoy watching rather than one you cuddle. Bill prefers to keep his distance. He may take a treat from your hand if he feels like it, but he does not want to be touched or handled. You can sometimes sneak in a quick pet, but he’ll immediately walk away once he’s decided he’s done. He’s clear about his boundaries, and he’ll bark to let you know when you’ve crossed them. It’s part of his charm — expressive, opinionated, and genuinely entertaining. He also prefers to live alone. After a long period of side‑by‑side housing, we attempted a slow introduction to another chinchilla, but he reacted with significant aggression. Because of this, a single‑pet home is the best fit for him. With time, patience, and a calm environment, Bill may grow more comfortable and friendly — some chinchillas do slowly open up once they feel safe. But it’s equally possible that he will always be who he is: an independent little character who likes his space and prefers to be admired from afar. The right adopter will appreciate him exactly as he is and enjoy the quiet joy of earning whatever small moments of trust he chooses to give. He does use his corner litter box to urinate.
